Last set of Photos Gathered

This was the last set of photos that I made with the final model within my magazine who features within the contents page of my magazine. Here are the photos I made:

In the end I used one of these pictures within my contents page as I did not think it was suitable for a cover or double page spread. There is also not a lot of variety within the two shots. However the clothing and props are alright with a blue hoodie (suits my colour scheme) and some Dr. Dre beats headphones which help to acheive the genre I want.

Second lot of Photos Gathered

The next set of photos I gathered was for the double page spread with Joe Woolon as the feature. I did this in front of a brick wall to give it an urban effect. Here is the photos that I took:

In this I used similar things to what I specified which was a dark jacket plimsolls and jeans. All of the photos are of him wearing the same clothing however this time I changed up some of the shots. In the range of shots I took I have a close-up (taken from the side), medium close-up (side and from the front) and a full body shot (front). This was a bit more varied to what I did in the earlier shots. I used two of these in my double page spread for my magazine.

First Photos Gathered

I got all of my photos from the time set on the schedule, with several phostos taken of each actor. The first person I took photos of was Steve Boundy where I placed him in front of a plain white wall for ease of editing in the future. Steve would be the cover artist who would appear on the front cover of my magazine. Here are the pictures I took:

In all of these photos Steve has the same props and clothing throughout which are the ones specified in the schedule I made. I made sure he worn a dark coloured hoodie so that he sticks out from the background and so that he suits the colour scheme within the magazine. The red headphones were also good as they stood out from everything else on the picture as it was completley different from the other colours featured. The shots were also mid-close ups which was specifried on the schedule also as I wanted this on the front cover. However there could have been more variety with the range of shots. Not all of these pictures were used as they are all very similar but I did use three of them.

This the my magazine schedule for the photo shoots so that I can compile a variety of pictures for my music magazine. Here it is:

Locations

These are the locations where the imagery will be shot. For the first location which will feature on the front cover of the magazine I have decided to take the imagery in a plain background so that it is easier to edit. This will likely be a plain white wall within school. For the front cover I am going to try and add some blue electrical effects in the background of the model on a white background so taking the imagery in front of a plain background will make this easier to do.

Another location for the imagery is going to be in front  of a brick wall (probably within the school) to give it that urban look and also makes it look quite cool and different to the other backgrounds that will feature within the magazine. I think this also appeals to the younger audience that I am targeting towards.

I have decided to use one of the drama studios within school to create a dark environment for some of the imagery. I decided on using this location because the genre is often represented as being in a dark environment like David Guetta and Calvin Harris as they make house music.

Magazine Props/Clothing

The props/clothing I will be using for the imagery within the magazine are the following:

  • Black Beats Headphones
  • Dark (coloured) Hoodie/Jacket
  • T shirt
  • Black Glasses
  • Jeans
  • Dark (coloured) Plimsolls
The Beats headphones will feature on the front cover of the magazine on the main model. Beats are a renowned brand and is known for have a good bass. This suits the sort of music I want to target. As well as people like Calvin Harris who use headphones when making music. It is also important that they are black so that they do not clash with the colour scheme of the magazine.

Another prop I will use is a pair of black glasses. This seems quite popular from the survey as props associated with the magazine as well as some of the artists mentioned using them. It is important that they are black as they are the most common on the artists as well as not clashing.

The sort of clothing I'm aiming for is a casual style which suits the colour scheme within the magazine. Hoodies and jackets are commonly worn with T shirts as well as jeans being worn by the people associated which was a similar response within the survey so I decided to go with this casual sort of style.

For the footwear for the imagery I decided to go with some plimsolls in a dark colour which suits the rest of what they are wearing. I decided upon these because they are not too flashy yet stylish. This means that the attention is focused on the artist and not their shoes.

Front Cover Plan

In the other plans for the magazine I made them on publisher just to get the basic planning and layout set up however for the front cover I drew it out instead. This was because it was easier to be able to get the exact imagery you want in the plan by drawing it. This was important for the front cover as I wanted an original title that helped symbolise the magazine better than a ordinary set font as well as the image and the text surrounding the image being very important. Here is the plan:

Magazine Plan

I have made a contents plan for my magazine which shows the basic layout I want the magazine to be like when I make it. This will help me understand what I need to get such as; the right colours  I need to in the imagery to compliment the layout and colour scheme within the magazine. It also helps with displaying how the the text and imagery can work together as well as preventing any mistakes I may have encountered with the design if I did not do it. Here is the plan for my contents page and the double page spread:

This is just the basic layout with some of the colour scheme I will be using implemented meaning that the look  will be quite different once complete and the layout may be adjusted slightly in the future.

Questionnaire Results

I have now conducted my survey and have received the feedback given to me from 20 people. Using this information gathered I can now use this to help apply to work to make sure that it is as accurate and well designed as possible. Here is some of the information gathered:
This gives you some of the basic information on who I surveyed with most of people being in the age range '16-21' and being male however there is some feedback from other age groups and genders which makes the overall opinion fairer. The young male group is also the audience that I would like to target. Here is some of the key information gathered:
This shows that the print form of media is predominantly used with online also quite close however the other two options are either not used by a lot or no one who was surveyed used it. This clearly shows that the print version of the magazine should be the primary medium as the most people use it.

Other information gathered is the artists that people associated with the electric/hiphop genre. From the results there was quite a lot of variation this was partly because of misunderstanding as I did not make the question clear enough to the user so, I had to alter it to make easier to know what I was looking for. Overall I am quite happy as most of the results are artists that I could use. Here is some of the amounts:

Calvin Harris     5
David Guetta     5
Example            3
Daft Punk          3
Swedish house mafia    2
Tinie Tempah     2
Will.I.am            2
Skrillex              2

I have filtered some of the results so that they fit in with the genre I am targeting (some more than others) as well as being the most popular. The next thing I asked was what sort of colour scheme they would like to see in this type of magazine. Here are the results:

Blue 16
Black 12
White  7
Yellow 6
Red 3
Green 3
Grey 2
Silver 2

From this information I have decided up on a colour scheme of blue black and white due to them being the most popular colours overall with the people who I surveyed. Finally I found out what prop/clothing they thought help represent the genre. The main things that came up were headphones, modern casual clothing (jeans/chinos, hoodie), glasses and facial hair. These are some of the things I need to consider when creating imagery so that it does not look out of place.

Double page spread Analysis

I have now done some research into the double page spreads featured within the magazines and one of the magazines I have looked into is the magazine 'Rewind' again as it closely resembles the genre I am targeting. Here is some analysis of a double page spread within the magazine:
With most double page spreads they often overlap the imagery over the two pages. This is to show the reader that both pages are based on the image featured. It also looks more appealing when you can expand the image further and to make sure that the take is spread out and not crammed onto the one page.

There is another reference to the colour used within the example is the colour of the text associated with the colour of the imagery. This looks like a good idea to compliment the image with the text that surrounds this best utilised on the title on the page with the gold and silver. Another thing to do with the title is the use of a rhetorical question. What this does is encourage the reader to read into the article to learn and perhaps answer what the article is about. It also makes the article seem more dramatic by having the question there.

Another thing that has come up is the variation in effect of the font. Size, bold and highlight are all used within the spread. This is used to do several things such as making the headers and sub headings stand out so the reader can easily tell what that section is about. As well as being used to ensure that the text is not dull and boring and is separated into sections so its easier to manage and read. Lastly, the highlighter can bee used to highlight any key information within the text that you want to bring to the readers attention.

Front page Analysis

I have made some more analysis on the front covers of magazines for my genre, this time I have made some analysis on a front cover of 'Rewind' magazine which features an artist which I would associate with my genre in 'Example'. Here is my analysis:
Expanding on the clothing it looks like it would be important to make sure that the clothing fits in well with the colour scheme as shown in this image with the blue stripes on the hoodie working well with the blue and white colour scheme in the background. I have to consider this when getting imagery for my magazine to make sure there is not a horrible clash of colours that would make the cover look horrible to whoever sees it.

I also quite like the effect of the electric blue surrounding the artist which helps associate with the kind of music they are about. The final thing that I think works and may also utilise is the use of capital letters on the majority of the text featured. This to me makes it stand out more to the reader and makes it easier to read when used briefly.
